Both the existence of visual stress and its treatment are controversial - some research endorses the benefit of colour filters, whilst others do not. More research is needed to get definitive answers. We would only suggest use of coloured filters if you have experienced the benefit for yourself during your assessment.
No - at Vision Through Colour we investigate visual difficulties and help manage visual problems and are not qualified to diagnose dyslexia. Dyslexia is diagnosed by an educational psychologist or a specialist assessor.
Whilst colour perception can be affected by looking through coloured filters, and certainly care should be taken when judging traffic signals, most lens wearers are remarkably unaware of the colour in their lenses when they are worn. This is because of perceptual experiences called adaptation and colour constancy. The human brain has a remarkable ability to perceive objects as their true colour, regardless of the colour of the illumination by which they are lit and the environment on which they are seen.
Because 'visual dyslexia' is a term that hasn't been defined, it's use can be unhelpful. It is more helpful to consider visual stress and dyslexia as two separate conditions that can occur together. Some people with dyslexia have visual problems, and it is those difficulties that we manage with eye exercises and coloured lenses where appropriate.
Dyslexia and visual stress are two separate conditions. Whilst visual stress seems to be more common in those with dyslexia than without specific learning difficulty, it is not a cause of dyslexia, nor is any intervention to be seen as a cure.
Once diagnosed with visual stress, patients can start their tailored management as soon as precision-tinted lenses are made up. This will improve symptoms as soon as they are worn.
Possibly not. This is a specialist area of optometry and is not part of most routine eye examinations. There are currently only a small number of opticians in the UK who specialise in visual stress.
